Robotic Hair Transplant

Robotic Hair Transplant

Hair transplant is the best hair restoration procedure, where the existing hair is being transplanted from a donor site to a recipient site. Hair transplant surgery is performed by utilizing two techniques- FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant). Robotic hair transplant is the latest and advanced hair transplant procedure that utilizes FUE hair transplant procedure. This is the greatest achievement in the field of hair transplant since it has helped to achieve perfect and highly efficiencient results.

Robotic hair transplant is an image-guided robotic system that helps in assisting the surgeons with a robotic arm and conducts a successful FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant procedure. A manual FUE procedure consumes a lot of time in removing the hair grafts from the back of the head. Whereas the robotic system that is guided by the surgeon can bring an exact angle, penetration depth and consistency to provide the best grafts for harvesting in no time. It can remove the hair grafts individually and implant them efficiently.

The Benefit of Robotic Hair Transplant

  • The procedure includes no stitches and reduces the recovery time
  • The donor scarring is decreased
  • The number of follicular units is increased
  • Increased follicular units can be harvested in a specific area
  • Created grafts require less trimming
  • The techniques are customised for a particular person based on different punch sizes
  • Less invasive approach
  • The survival chances of harvested follicular units are high

Reduces the chances of wounding and also prevents the damage of the existing hairs

Who is a Good Candidate for this Procedure?

Patients who are afraid of incisions or want to keep a very short haircut at the back and sides of their scalp can choose to undergo a robotic hair transplant. Overall the candidates must be in good health with no major medical conditions. The candidates who are addicted to smoking are instructed to quit smoking before undergoing the procedure.

A robotic hair transplant procedure is performed on an outpatient basis in the surgeon’s office. The surgical procedure is performed under local anesthesia and the surgical procedure may take about four to eight hours to complete the surgery.

During the surgical process, the patients are first seated comfortably in the robotic chair, then the surgeon applies a small rectangular picture frame like device on the back of the scalp.  Then the robotic mechanism automatically positions itself at the donor area. The segregation of the follicular units is carried on from the adjacent donor tissues. It is a highly repetitive and labor-intensive process that requires great precision. The robotic mechanism executes the entire procedure painlessly.

The system positions at an angle that includes a punch tool on the scalp which scans the skin for a follicular unit for the extraction. the robot aims the extraction by following a dual punch mechanism, the inner sharp tool executes the entire thing around the follicular unit. The outer blunt tool dissects the graft from the surrounding tissue. Then, the optical system scans for the next follicular unit that has to be removed. The arm positions over until next time as it aligns the instrument with the follicles and the extraction process are repeated. The sequence continues until the robot has finished harvesting from within the defined area. Then a robotic arm installs a 1mm needle which contains both sharp and dull components. After the completion of the procedure, the technicians manually remove the grafts from the scalp. The follicular grafts after removal, are robotically transported to a container where the follicles are kept cool and moist until implantation.

The healing period is short so the patients can resume daily activities within a day or two. Strenuous activities can only be resumed after few weeks until the surgeon instructs to do so. The post-op instructions that are provided by the surgeon must be followed to obtain the best results. The results obtained are incredible as that would help the patients to achieve a head full of thick hairs. The final results will be visible within six months of the surgery with no visible scarring.

Associated Complications

The side effects of robotic hair transplant are rare, however, complications like bleeding, infection, swelling, bruising, numbness, and itching may still exist. These are temporary side effects and usually, do not last for long. Such conditions can be controlled with medications that are prescribed by the surgeon. In cases of any complicated situations or infections contacting with the surgeon is necessary.
